PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE (PPL)

Earning your Private Pilot License gives you the freedom to explore the skies on your own terms.

With this certification, you’ll be able to:

  • Fly with passengers anywhere you choose.

  • Operate a variety of aircraft types.

  • Buy or rent an aircraft that fits your needs and preferences.

Privileges and Limitations:

  • You may fly in visual flight conditions (VFR).

  • Additional training is required to operate complex, multi-engine, tailwheel, or float-equipped aircraft.

  • To fly in clouds or low-visibility conditions, an Instrument Rating is required.

Requirements:

  • Pass a medical exam from an FAA-approved physician.

  • Be at least 16 years old to solo, and 17 to take the final exam.

  • Complete an approved ground school (such as the Jeppesen Online Training Course) and pass the FAA written knowledge test with a score of 70% or higher.

  • Log a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours of instruction and 10 hours of solo flying.

  • Successfully pass the FAA practical test (checkride).

INSTRUMENT RATING (IR)

Adding an Instrument Rating expands your skills and privileges as a pilot. It allows you to fly in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), navigate using instruments alone, and access a wider range of flying opportunities.

Requirements:

  • Hold a Private Pilot Certificate.

  • Complete an approved ground school and pass the FAA written knowledge test with a score of 70% or higher.

  • Log at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC).

  • Accumulate 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including at least 15 hours with a certified instrument instructor.

  • Complete instrument cross-country training, including one IFR cross-country flight of at least 250 nautical miles.

  • Pass the FAA practical test (checkride), with examiner fee.
